量化位数是指在模拟信号转换数字信号时采用的二进制位数。例如windows RGB 色系中,每种色用8位进制数进行量化,而在CD数码中采用16位二进制数进行量化。量化级的大小决定了声音的动态范围,16位的量化级表示人耳刚刚听得见极细微的声音到难以忍受的巨大噪声这样一个声音范围。量化级对应的二进制位数称为量化位数,有时也直接称采样位数或抽样位数。显然量化位数越多,音质越好,但数据量也越大。
